Description Activated carbon is highly adsorptive for many toxicants, including mercuric chloride, alkaloids including strychnine, barbiturates, etc. Although it does not detoxify them, activated charcoal will effectively prevent absorption of toxicants if properly used. It can be effectively combined with emetic and gastric lavage techniques.
